Brave Pet of the month is Opi!

This months Brave Pet is . . . OPI!

2016 has not been the best of years for Opi.
Six months ago, he lost a "fight" with a car. He was immediately rushed down to our Cardiff Hospital, in severe shock, with suspected head trauma and a right foreleg that was completely floppy.
Following treatment for shock, lots of pain killers and fluids we took X-rays of his right front leg. Thankfully, there were no fractures present.
Opi made a very good improvement over the following two days. However, he was still completely unable to use his leg. We were concerned that he had damaged the nerve supply to the leg during the accident.
Opi was referred to Langford Vets, part of The University of Bristol School of Veterinary Science, for further assessment. There, it was confirmed that he had indeed damaged the bundle of nerves supplying his right front leg. Sadly, his owners were warned that this damage may be permanent.
He was prescribed a six month rehabilitation and physical therapy program to encourage passive movement and strengthen the muscles whilst we all waited to see if nerve function returned. Throughout this time, Opi suffered intermittent spasms of pain which would leave him very uncomfortable and unhappy. He needed long term pain killers to minimise his discomfort.

Unfortunately, despite time, treatment and incredibly diligent care from his devoted "parents", Opi was still unable to use the leg after six months and he was still suffering intermittent pain.
A very difficult decision was made to amputate his leg - it was causing him more trouble than it was worth.
Opi underwent major surgery to remove his right fore-quarter - his entire front right leg and shoulder blade. He made a very good, very rapid recovery and went home the next day.
Two weeks later, the surgical site had fully healed and he was so much happier in himself!

Opi is now coping very well and loves his walks again.
Throughout this entire period, Opi has been extremely courageous and a model patient. We wish him the very best for a long, happy, three-legged future!
Well done Opi!
