Leptospirosis

Leptospirosis is a potentially life threatening bacterial disease that affects both dogs and humans.
It is carried by rats and other rodents and survives in damp environments, including still and slow moving water.
Dogs that frequent farmland, streams, rivers and ponds are considered most at risk from Leptospirosis.
Until recently there have been only two strains of the disease seen in the UK and our dog vaccinations offered protection against both of these strains.
However, other strains of this disease are present on mainland Europe and these are now being seen in the UK. An outbreak which affected more than fifty dogs has recently occurred in the Bristol/Bath area.
As a result of this, a new vaccination has been manufactured to protect against these additional strains. Valley Vets will be using the new vaccine for all future dog vaccinations.
We are also offering a ‘top up’ vaccination for all previously vaccinated dogs. This involves a course of two injections, 28 days apart.
We have negotiated a short-term discounted price of £18 for the course of two injections.
For low risk dogs, we will ‘top up’ their protection at their next annual health-check and booster vaccination, for no additional charge.
